The bottom line

The 4 Series comes across as a solid used buy if you treat the engine as the make-or-break item. Oil leaks show up on half of them and cooling problems on a third, so start every look-over by checking for seepage around the motor and verifying the coolant system is tight and not overheating. Tires and a few error codes are common enough to use as bargaining chips, but walk if the leaks are heavy or the cooling is already compromised. The usual panel resprays are just typical used-car wear, not a red flag by themselves.
